PB works- online team collaboration tool

PB works is an online team collaboration, the productivity application that I use for my work recently. It is similar to Google Docs but more functional. Besides the typical programs like word processing, spreadsheets, project management, it also contains wiki and enable users share the information with people outside the team by URL link.
I think it is a useful Web 2.0 tool that can be used in academic enviornments. Actually, more than 300,000 educational workspaces has been established on PBworks. Teachers, parents and students can interact effectively by using it. In comparison with Google Doc, PBworks seems more professional in team work. The basic edition is for free.
The things we can do with PBworks:
  • Class Resources - Publish class notes, PowerPoint lectures, schedules and policies; show off examples of great student work.
  • Group Projects - Build collaborative pages, start discussions and encourage comments.
  • Parent Outreach - Keep parents involved. Post assignments, key dates and volunteer lists. All available at home, from work, or anywhere.
  • Student Portfolios - Give students their own page to post content, upload homework, and share their work.
  • Expand Horizons - Share and interact with other classrooms or groups, across town or around the world.

21st centry learning and classroom

What are the  differences between education in today and yesterday? What do our children can do with emerging technologies? What should we prepare our students for the furture? These are the questions that we educators should ask ourselves.

World is changing rapid today, we would never be satisfied with our knowledge no matter how much we have learnt. So how should we do to motivate the new generation of learners to learn effectively?  Students learn differently and need customized pathways and paces to learn. Standadized education are no longer meet students' learning needs. With 21st centry's technologies, customization becomes possible to every students and schooling can be an intrisically motivating experience.

Web 2.0 tools use enables communication, investigation and participation globally. Teachers can be a guide on the side to help individual students' progress and students are able to learn things whenever and whatever they desire to learn. The purpose we integrating technology into classroom is to make our students easily understand what they are learning with great enthusiasm. Building students' intrinsic motivation, then learning will naturally be their lifelong activity.

Disruptive innovation in Education

The following two vedios illustrate that what disruptive innovation is and how it provides an alternative to our education system.

Disruptive innovations in industries or companies are quite different from in education. People didn't create new disruptive business model in public education because almost all disruptions take root among nonconsumers. However, public education is set up as a public utility, consequently, the nonconsumers are limited. And existing orgnizations cannot naturally disrupt themselves, which is also the reason why computers haven't changed schools.

So if we want to make our disruptive innovation successful in education, it is better to set up a new innovative education system with different resources, processes and priorities based on sustaining traditional education system, then bit by bit improve and change the way learning takes place in public schools.

To adopt disruptive transition--- computer-based learning to classes, educators need to understand  how to introduce innovations to avoid the teaching and learning processes that are similar to what they were in the days before computers. And what we can do with technologies are helping students learning in the ways that their brains are wired to learn and giving students more individual attention, which is also the purpose we intergrating computers into class settings.

Purpose of blogging

Hey, I am here~

I used to have a blog in Blogger which wrote in Chinese. This is the first blog that I write in English. I will share all discoveries here and I will be happy to receive suggestions and advices from my professors, classmates, friends and all visitors. I regard this blog as a tool that gives access to instructional technology as well as a tool for me to improve my writting.  I think education is a process that gives learning opportunity to both teachers and students. Thus, I hope this experience will benefit myself as well as my future students.

Thanks for coming and enjoy your traveling with me ~ ^_^
